If you were given the opportunity to walk through a portal and visit yourself in another world, will you do it?
This is part of what past-life regression therapy is all about–and if all this sounds intimidating yet fascinating to you, you are not alone! We set out to get more answers by interviewing one of our dear members, Melanie Lam, a qualified Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) practitioner and certified hypnotherapist to shed some light on how she incorporates this into her private practice.
What is past-life regression therapy?
According to Melanie, past-life regression therapy involves finding the root cause of your present-day issues, whether it be anxiety, depression, phobias to self-esteem issues. Oftentimes, the root cause of the problem could lie within your childhood, for example, anxiety stemming from various traumatic childhood incidents and events.
As she explains further: “In some cases; however, clients uncover the root cause of their issue as originating from a previous life. Past life regression therapy is acknowledging that as it is and helping the client to process it, gain clarity on it and release the issue, which is usually an unwanted belief system, pattern or behaviour.”
While these memories are normally hidden in the subconscious mind, through hypnosis, Melanie works with her clients to cut through the noise of daily life to access and locate the memories held deep within us.
“Our subconscious mind is like a hard drive that stores all of our life experiences, memories and beliefs we have. And this is where we can access those childhood incidents, events or memories and get to the root cause of why something might be holding you back.”
In other words, past-life regression presupposes reincarnation–and the fact that traumas from past lives can overflow into our present lives. By delving deeper into our past lives, this can potentially help some people unlock their traumas, explain fears and phobias, and give context to inexplicable issues or relationship difficulties.
For Melanie, her journey into past-life regression therapy first began when she was persuaded by a mentor to take a course on it. It turned out to be life-changing and left a profound impact on her, which led her to explore and work on almost every issue she had from childhood to adulthood.
“I started exploring and working on almost every issue I had from childhood to adulthood, past lives to soul work.”
The work that she has done on herself also clarified her life purpose–helping others to bring about profound change, understanding and healing.
What does a typical session look like?
If all that has piqued your interest, Melanie shares what a session with her usually entails: “Each session is an hour and a half to 2 hours. We would usually spend the first 20 minutes discussing what your concerns are, what you would like to work on or what goals you might have. Then I would do a meditation that will help you to access your subconscious mind.”
Melanie went on to share her experience of supporting a client who was experiencing work-related anxiety issues–the client was growing into her role at work but was having trouble leading discussions, speaking up and giving presentations. This came with a lot of stress and anxiety, and through treatment, they were able to discover the root cause to be something that occurred when the client was an infant: “She was crying a lot in her cot but nobody came to attend to her for a long time, and she had other instances as a child where she was speaking to family members but they essentially ignored her or shut her down.”
As a result, her client started to form a belief that there was no point in speaking up because everyone ignored her anyway. Through their work together, Melanie was able to help her client explore all these childhood memories and help her to process and release the limiting beliefs formed as a result (and she’s now thriving at work more than ever!)
That being said, Melanie says that you do not have to believe in past lives for the therapy to be effective; instead, “it helps to go in with an open mind and stay open to the possibilities…anyone who chooses to take responsibility for their own healing will benefit greatly from RTT/past life regression”.
What other approaches do you work with?
Melanie also utilises various other techniques and modalities as part of her practice, including coaching, Reiki energy healing, inner child healing, as well as Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT). This is a treatment approach which looks to find the origin or root cause of the issue you are facing, what caused it and why you still have it.
Think about it like a fast-track way of undergoing a system upgrade where self-limited beliefs are reframed and replaced with new, more positive ones. This means accessing your subconscious mind to find, explore, relive, and clarify past experiences, and then going back to the source of your problems and releasing what no longer works for you.
“We are ruled by our subconscious mind, from bodily functions such as blinking and breathing to our thoughts, habits and beliefs. Our thoughts, habits and beliefs then influence our behaviours. RTT cuts through the noise with hypnosis to access our subconscious mind. It works by reframing our core beliefs, values, habits, and emotions deep in the subconscious.”
During sessions, Melanie supports her clients to go into a deeply relaxed, light trance state through hypnosis. While hypnotherapy has often been considered an elusive type of therapy; however, it is simply a form of focused awareness and a tool for healing from within.
“Hypnosis is a natural state of mind of deep inward focus. It is like an experience of being in a flow state and like being completely absorbed while watching a movie. This focus gives your mind more control, not less. When you’re in hypnosis, you’re in the alpha brainwave frequency; the same frequency you’re in when you are deeply relaxed at the moment just before you drift off to sleep.”
While a common misconception that people have about hypnosis is that they will lose control of their mind and body, Melanie clarifies that at no point in time is your mind being “taken over”. She adds: “No, you cannot be made to do what you do not want to do in hypnosis. And you cannot stay in hypnosis if you do not want to. The mind is more suggestible in hypnosis and
will accept things in hypnosis more so than outside of hypnosis but it still has to be things that you already want to happen.”
Healing comes in many forms.
As someone who first started working in companies ranging from luxury to finance, Melanie was able to frequently travel for work, see the world and help to build businesses. However, that all changed after a while, and she started to feel very superficial and empty.
Thankfully, that all changed when she found her calling: “I help women who feel stuck or who perhaps hate their jobs and feel that their life is meaningless, find their purpose so that they can feel confident and empowered to pursue what they really want.”
“When I work with clients, each and every one of them is different, and their issues and root causes are different. Every session is client-centric and different which makes for really interesting therapy. I’m kept on my toes a lot and never bored! Every session is a safe space to explore or to support what the client needs and that is what is most important to me.”
In fact, she is currently in the middle of building a specific protocol just for this (and we are looking forward to it!)
Ultimately, it is undeniable that our minds are extremely powerful, and when you work with an experienced practitioner, it can truly change lives in a myriad of ways and colours. While the process is different for everyone–some might see memories that contain symbols and metaphors, and others might go through multiple past lives in just the first session–whichever form of healing you go for, it’s important to go in with an open heart and mind.
“Therapy is a great resource for working out issues and building emotional resilience. It is an under-utilised resource, a secret weapon that can greatly enhance and add value to a person’s life. As with every new experience, it is common to feel nervous or apprehension but do try it as the rewards are well worth the journey.”
