The 2026 Private Practice Reset: How Therapists Can Get ‘Unstuck’

With the busyness of running your own private practice, it can be difficult to take time to reflect on how the business is doing; and more importantly, how you’re feeling. In interactions with our therapists at A Space Between, we often see how practitioners may feel stuck or drained towards the end of the year. Whether it’s dealing with their own admin backlog or managing clients, being an independent practitioner can indeed be a challenging journey.

This is your reminder to pause for a deep breath. If you’re feeling stuck trying to figure out ‘what’s next’ for the new year, we share some tips on how you can reset for greater things to come your way in 2026.

ASB Reset 1

What to Focus on in your Year-End Reset

Doing a year-end evaluation and reset may take more than a couple of hours, but it’s worth the investment in time and effort. After all, it’s only by ensuring that your practice is sustainable – both in terms of your finances and business operations as well as your mental health and well-being – that you’ll be able to focus your efforts where they matter most: your clients.

And so, block out an entire afternoon (or more) and find a quiet space where you can sit uninterrupted with your thoughts. You should leave this exercise feeling refreshed and ready to take on 2026.

Identify your Energy Sources and Drainers

Working as a mental health professional is both emotionally fulfilling and draining – you get to see the part you play in your client’s improvement; and yet have to take on a lot of their emotional burden and baggage. If you’re operating blindly, without reflecting on the clients you’ve been taking on, this may eventually lead to burnout, particularly if cases aren’t resonating with you or are imposing a greater strain on your mental well-being than you were conscious of.

Take this time to reflect on what has given you energy throughout the year, and conversely, what has made you feel drained over the months. For example: how do you feel after the different types of clients you interact with? Are there certain kinds of cases that leave you feeling tired and hollow after the consultation; or do you find yourself looking forward to certain sessions with specific clients?

This exercise isn’t meant to be a judgmental one, but rather a neutral and reflective activity, focused on identifying what brings you energy and what takes energy away from you. Doing this can help you decide if you’d like to retain or discharge certain clients that you have; as well as have a better idea of new clients you may want to take on in 2026. This helps you conserve your mental strength and energy, creating a more sustainable practice for you in the new year.

Reflect on your Purpose

Disconnection from one’s work is a common reason for burnout, and it can sneak up on you if you’re caught in the bustle of everyday work, without even realising it.

In this session, take the time to ask yourself if the work you’ve been doing still resonates with why you’d decided to become a mental health practitioner, and why you’d wanted to start a private practice. Some questions you can ask yourself include:

  • What do I want to achieve in my practice?
  • Is what I’m doing right now still aligning with the reason why I’d started this journey?
  • What excites me most about my practice?

More importantly, if you find that your current operation doesn’t seem to spark your purpose, consider: what are the steps I can take to shift my path back towards my reason for practice?

Ask the Hard Questions

On the more business-end of things, a year-end reset also means looking at your operations, how things have been running, and if things need to be changed about how your business has been set up.

Be honest with yourself and ask the hard questions of whether you’d achieved your financial targets for the year; looking at your Profit & Loss statements; looking at how many new clients you’d acquired this year or lost; reflecting on the processes that worked well for you or didn’t work well; and if there’s anything you need to do to expand the business, such as hiring admin or logistical support.

Relook your Rates

After you’ve taken a serious look at how your business has performed in 2025, another key question to consider is if you should raise your rates. This can feel like a difficult decision, especially if you know that some of your clients may be facing financial difficulties.

However, this is your reminder that it’s important you value and treasure your own time appropriately, and ensuring that you’re paid fairly is a component of that. Additionally, as your own business owner, you have the flexibility to decide how you want to enforce this. Raising your rates doesn’t necessarily mean a blanket increase for all your clients; and you can work out a financial model that still ensures all your clients receive support, depending on their financial health.

Make Time to Recharge

Lastly, give yourself the permission to reset and recharge during this year-end reset. It’s common for practitioners to feel guilty about taking time out for themselves, when there’s still so much work to be done. However, only by caring for your mental health, will you have the emotional energy and compassion to best support your clients with their needs.

Self-care is important for everyone, and that includes you. So take the time to engage in your hobbies or spend time with your loved ones to refill your emotional well; and have that good energy carry you into 2026 and beyond.

We look forward to collaborating with you again in the new year.
