What is the greatest reward in being a counsellor for the queer community?

Greater self awareness, confidence & esteem. Improved significant relationships.

What is the greatest challenge in being a counsellor for the queer community?

Being misunderstood as someone practicing Conversion Therapy which is something I’ve never trained in nor saw effectiveness in.

What was your path to becoming a therapist?

Having experienced infertility followed by being an adoptive mom, I was searching for tools to support my daughters, myself, hubby followed by others on similar journeys as I. I went back to school, did my Masters & decided to branch out to the other areas.

What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?

I’m very hopeful in the younger generation who values therapy sessions & not wait till something happens before they reach out for help.

What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?

Supervision & continuous learning/upgrading of my skills.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to try therapy?

It is normal to feel resistance, wonder why can’t I figure it out on my own, how would a complete stranger be able to help me… remember that your well being is the main focus & I am trained to support you - give the session a go & you might be surprised what you discover.

What kind of training have you had in working with the LGBTQ population?

I’ve been working with LGBT individuals for a few years supported by good supervisors.

What should someone know about working with you?

I adapt my counselling approach to the needs of each client and use an integrated approach using concepts such as Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gottman Couple Therapy, Brainspotting, Choice Theory and others. I focus on heightening my clients’ self-awareness to empower them to make better decision as well as considerations towards personal growth which, in turn, may alter their interactions with those around as well as situations.

How do your own core values shape your approach to therapy?

I strongly believe we exist in systems which support, build but sometimes hurt - which is where I hopes to provide support and help in. I am committed to providing an inclusive, non-judgemental and safe space to all my clients to support their journey towards their goals.
