What is the greatest reward in being a counsellor for the queer community?

The greatest reward for me is that I have the privilege to learn and connect with the queer community's journey to understand their vulnerabilities and deepest struggles in life.

What is the greatest challenge in being a counsellor for the queer community?

The greatest challenge for me is that the queer community may perceive that I cannot adequately understand their vulnerabilities and deepest struggles. Therefore, I need to build rapport to win trust with curiosity, a non-judgemental stance, and be culturally sensitive towards the queer community's needs.

What was your path to becoming a therapist?

During my counselling studies, I discovered that I enjoyed listening to people's problems, while being empathic, non-judgemental, and client-centric. Being a therapist is what I want to do in my life, and I have never once regretted this career path. I also enjoy learning and upgrading my counselling skills via courses time to time, so that I am able to provide my clients with a rewarding counselling experience. Being passionate and excited at every counselling session, I remain curious at every couple or individual who comes to therapy, as every person comes with a different past and experience that shapes who they are today. I derive satisfaction when my counselling clients have an "a-ha" moment that makes them more self-aware and change their perception with regards to their issues. This is done through reflexive questioning techniques and other counselling therapeutic modalities. Hence, this creates holistic healing and personal growth for my clients.

What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?

I am excited about a few things, firstly, there are more integrative approaches to therapy, e.g. Individual Psychotherapy with Sandplay Therapy. Also, clients are more accepting towards these integrative approaches, eg. experiential Sandplay Expressive Arts Therapy alongside traditional "talk" therapy to facilitate healing, self-awareness, and personal growth. Secondly, mental health, and emotional well-being are now considered equally important to your physical health. And lastly, it is an excellent notion that the younger generation are more open to seek help early in their relational or individual challenges.

What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?

I am excited about learning and remain curious to what else I do not know about therapy. To stay relevant, updated, and build my competencies as a therapist, I invest in trainings, workshops, webinars, conferences, read books, read journals, self-reflect, attend supervision, discuss therapy ideas with my peers, garner client feedback, so that I can provide the best counselling experience to all my clients.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to try therapy?

It is absolutely normal to feel anxious, scared, and hesitant to try therapy, especially if it is your very first time. There are different types of therapies and not all therapies conform to the traditional "talk" therapy. "Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain." - Carl Jung. This quote resonates with me because at times, healing comes in alternative forms outside the traditional "talk" therapy. The above Jungian quote refers to Sandplay Therapy: and Sandplay Therapy is Non-Verbal (you can choose not to say anything throughout the Sandplay process); Sensory and Experiential (you work with your hands and sand); while allowing for Mind-Body-Spirit Connection. Sandplay Therapy is beneficial for all clients, particularly those experiencing Grief and Trauma, and Sandplay Therapy is Integrative with other Counselling Therapies. In addition, sometimes it takes a while to find the right therapist fit, and therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client. It is important for you to feel safe, supported, and comfortable to share in therapy. However, once therapy has kick-started, you may be surprise with the beneficial effects of therapy; and you may feel liberated and wished that you had started therapy earlier!

What kind of training have you had in working with the LGBTQ population?

I attended a workshop on counselling the queer population and I have also counselled the queer population in the past. I remain non-judgemental to the queer population and will adopt a similar counselling approach to them, no different from my other clients.

What should someone know about working with you?

I will work collaboratively with my clients regarding their counselling goals and process with them on their issues, what they need, and how to best move forward at their pacing and readiness to do so. I adapt each counselling session to cater to clients' unique needs. Using a Systemic and Emotionally Focused approach, I integrate these two approaches with other therapeutic modalities to support my clients in the most effective way possible. I also integrate counselling with Sandplay Therapy, and Expressive Arts Therapy using Symbol Work. Sandplay Therapy is conducted at another venue.

How do your own core values shape your approach to therapy?

My core values as a therapist are being empathic, authentic, being curious, and non-judgemental, so that I can hold a warm and safe space for my clients to feel heard and understood. I also strive to build a therapeutic relationship with my clients base on mutual trust and collaboration.

Are you a queer affirmative practitioner?
