What was your path to becoming a therapist?

In 2021, I decided to pursue a career as a counselor in Singapore. This decision was inspired by witnessing the profound impact of mental health issues on those around me, including family and friends who struggled with depression and anxiety. After completing the required coursework at The School of Positive Psychology, I am currently working towards a Graduate Certificate of Psychological Science at James Cook University to further enhance my practical skills. Through my practical experience at the clinic, I have learned that many individuals are dealing with painful traumatic experiences from their past. I have studied various techniques, including flash techniques to help people reconstruct memories, and the polyvagal theory, which focuses on the autonomic nervous system. I now apply these approaches in my current practice.

What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?

The goal is for more people to be able to access psychological counseling with greater ease.

What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?

To continue learning and building my competencies as a provider, my primary goal is to complete the Graduate Certificate in Psychological Science at James Cook University. After that, I plan to pursue a Master's degree in Guidance and Counselling. Additionally, once I have gained two years of professional experience, I would like to undertake EMDR training.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to try therapy?

For individuals who are struggling, we first highlight that counseling is used by a surprisingly diverse range of people and that its effectiveness has been proven. We emphasize that, unlike medication, counseling carries minimal risk of side effects. It allows individuals to develop skills that can be applied not only to their current challenges but also to future situations. For those concerned about societal prejudice, it is important to note that confidentiality is strictly maintained.

What kind of training have you had in working with the LGBTQ population?

I have not participated in any specialized training programs for interacting with queer individuals. However, I have encountered such individuals in my personal circle and among my clients, and I have learned how to interact with them through practical experience. I make it a point not to discuss that aspect unless the person chooses to bring it up, and I am careful about how I address them.

What should someone know about working with you?

As a Japanese counselor offering services in English in Singapore, I want to highlight that communication can occasionally take longer due to language and cultural differences. However, this is not a negative aspect; it reflects my dedication to having thoughtful conversations. Many clients have responded positively to this approach.

How do your own core values shape your approach to therapy?

In my sessions, I focus on helping clients understand the uncertainty surrounding memory and cognition, as well as the brain's ability to change, known as neuroplasticity. This understanding enables them to recognize the potential for positive change in their lives. With the client’s permission, I often use brain models to enhance our shared understanding, demonstrating how positive thinking can influence the brain's structure.

Are you a queer affirmative practitioner?

No
