Transgender-Affirming Therapy: A Talk with June Chua

Transgender-Affirming Therapy: A Talk with June Chua

We are excited to announce a virtual talk on “Understanding Transgender Mental Health” with our guest speaker, June Chua. As a mental health advocate and founder of The T Project, a Singapore-based non-profit organisation that provides support for the transgender community, June has extensive experience working with transgender individuals and understanding their unique mental health needs.

This talk is designed for mental health practitioners who want to better serve the transgender community. June will discuss the difference between LGBT-friendly therapists and transgender-affirming therapists, and why it is important for therapists to be aware of this difference in order to provide effective and compassionate care for transgender clients. She will also share her personal experience as a transgender person and how it has shaped her advocacy work.

The event will be held on Google Meet and the link will be sent to attendees an hour before the stated time. To RSVP, please email [email protected]. We kindly ask for a donation for the tickets, and all proceeds will be given to the volunteer speaker(s).

Priority will be given to active members of A Space Between, but we welcome non-members who are interested in attending this event, subject to approval. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable insight into transgender mental health and enhance your professional skills in this area. We look forward to seeing you there!

“Before therapy, I was constantly overwhelmed by anxiety. Everyday tasks felt monumental, and I struggled to see a way forward. My thoughts were often consumed by self-doubt and fear of failure, making it hard to enjoy life or even get through the day.

Starting therapy was a turning point. Through our sessions, I learned to identify and challenge my negative thoughts. I discovered techniques to manage my anxiety, like cognitive restructuring and mindfulness, which helped me gain control over my emotions. Over time, I began to notice a significant shift: I felt more grounded and less fearful. I could approach problems with a clearer mind and more confidence.

Today, I’m able to handle stress more effectively and face challenges with a renewed sense of resilience. The difference is profound—what once seemed insurmountable now feels manageable, and I’m more optimistic about the future." – Anonymous

Addressing women's mental health is crucial, yet misconceptions often obscure effective support. Common myths include the belief that mental health issues in women are merely due to hormonal changes or are less serious than those in men. In reality, women's mental health conditions are influenced by a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors.

Another misconception is that women should simply "cope" with their mental health challenges without seeking help. This dismisses the importance of professional support and the complexities of mental health issues. Additionally, stigma around women expressing mental health struggles can deter them from seeking help.

Recognising and addressing these misconceptions is key to providing accurate and effective support for women's mental health.
