What was your path to becoming a therapist?

I became interested in psychology after a tragic & unexpected bereavement in 2002. My practical journey to becoming a counsellor started when I provided life coaching to a woman with Borderline Personality Disorder during a break in my normal work life and, in 2015, I committed fully to this path. As soon as I started my counselling course, I knew this was for me and, even though I was quite old to be considering such a major career change, I was always confident that it was the right decision.

What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?

The increased levels of acceptance of therapy as a means to resolving life issues and building greater life satisfaction gives me hope that we can make the world a healthier and happier place, improving one life at a time.

What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?

I am continually upskilling myself through regular participation in psychology and counselling related training courses. I work closely with local sporting communities, volunteering with the Singapore Rugby Union and Sport Sg as a safeguarding officer, and the Women in Sports Committee (formed under the Singapore National Olympics Committee). I am also a volunteer with the Trauma Network for Children (a collaboration between KK Hospital and Temasek Foundation). These communities provide me with continual opportunities for learning through a variety of training courses and webinars.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to try therapy?

If you have something on your mind and regular discussions with family and friends are not helping resolve your issues, it may be time to give therapy a try. If, after a few sessions, you are not feeling hopeful about improving your life situation then you may look to change your therapist or type of therapy. There will be one such therapy out there which you will connect with and will help you move towards greater mental health and life satisfaction.

What should someone know about working with you?

I connect with people of all ages and backgrounds in a genuine and empathetic manner and put the development of the therapeutic relationship at the forefront of everything I do. I believe my own successes and failures in life have helped me develop my prime personal value of respect for others.

How do your own core values shape your approach to therapy?

My core values of respect, open-mindedness and compassion help me to accept clients as they are and to work with them to find the right approach which will help them address any issues they may be facing and move forward in life. I have a strong relationship based approach to therapy and believe that, in being able to build trust between myself and client, we are able to create an environment which will best allow healing to take place.
